Food Forward – Helping the Hungriest County in the Nation

We want to introduce you to a group of volunteers and visionaries that are doing something incredible.

With the news media jumping all over stories like this one:

Old news yes, but still mind-blowing!

We felt it very important to highlight one group of men and women who are using this awful statistic to create something wonderful.

The people at Food Forward have put together an organization dedicated to harvesting otherwise wasted food and donating 100% of it to the hungry people of Southern California. Born in 2009, this young nonprofit has already collected over 1 million pounds of fruit from California yards where roughly 70% of households have a fruit tree on their land.

It’s no coincidence that Food Forward’s original focus was the So-Cal area. In 2009, it was reported that over 1.7 million people in Los Angeles County dealt with food insecurity. That adds up to more than any other county in the entire country. Let that sink in. 40% of all food produced in the United States is thrown away, meanwhile 1.7 million go hungry in only one county.

Managing Director Meg Glasser makes it clear that this is only the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to feeding the hungry. She estimates that her organization is only reaching about 1% of the trees in the area. Imagine what they could do with 2% or even 5%?

Wait.. DON’T just imagine it. MAKE IT HAPPEN! There are a plethora of ways that you can help this amazing group of people. Find out more about Getting Involved, or perhaps make a small (or large) donation to their cause. Or perhaps you’re in the market for some Food Forward swag? Never fear, you can help feed the hungry while looking awesome.

This is exactly the type of work that Positive Activism is all about! Please check out the nonprofit on their website linked in the first paragraph, or find them on Facebook HERE. They also tweet!

And remember to hep us spread the love. LIKE this post on Facebook. SHARE it with your friends. We rely on the internet and word of mouth to get the word out. All it takes is a few clicks and you are doing so much to help these poor people.

Thank You,

The PA Team
